This week we have been learning about caterpillars and butterflies. 

We have been looking after live caterpillars in the classroom for a couple of weeks now and the children have been so interested in watching them grow. They have been getting bigger each day. When we came back to school on Monday the caterpillars had created their own chrysalis. We have been learning all about the life cycle of caterpillars and how the turn into butterflies. This process is called metamorphosis. 

The children are all so excited to see the butterflies when they come from the chrysalis. 

We have been doing lots of activities about butterflies and caterpillars this week. We read the story the Very Hungry Caterpillar, which is one of Miss Imrie's favourites. 

Then we have been learning about symmetry and making symmetrical patterns in butterfly wings. 

When we got back to school after the half term we were delighted to find that we had two butterflies in our net. The children were so excited to observe them and name them. They decided to call them 'Chocolate' and 'Strawberry'. We then set them free in the garden to go and make a lovely life out in the wild.
