All children from Y3-Y6 took part in a virtual 'introduction to Parliament' workshop. They learned about who works in the House of Commons and the House of Lords and were able to take a look inside. They discussed what MPs and Peers do and how they take on their roles. They discussed the qualities they think a person needs to become an MP: to be patient, confident at speaking in public, persuasive ,honest and to have knowledge about their area. They considered people they know who would make a good MP.
They then discussed the electoral system and how all adults are able to vote. They looked at the Election Map from 2019 and know that the colours show the different parties who won each seat. They learned that our MP is Bridget Phillipson.
Finally they discussed how laws and bills are passed from discussion by the MPs to a vote which is then passed on to be discussed in the House of Lords, to then being passed onto the Queen, before it becomes an act of Parliament.
Our children have had a great insight into Parliament and enjoyed the virtual visit. I wonder if we now have any budding MPs among us?
