After a comfortable bus ride, we arrived in Derwent Hill and what an eventful first afternoon! After meeting our instructors, we were shown to our rooms (named after the famous Lake District mountains) and unpacked our belongings. We then had the daunting task - for many - of MAKING OUR VERY OWN BEDS! Following this, we had a lovely lunch before grabbing our kit for the week (including the dreaded 'tomato suits' - which many of us believe are made out of ACTUAL tomato skins). However, that was not the end of our afternoon...

We started as we mean to go on and enthusiastically went out on our first adventure - climbing Latrigg: the views were absolutely stunning and some of us were speechless, as well as a little scared (as we reached the summit), but all was well when we saw the breath-taking scenes. We met back at the centre for some tea and we were soon ready to go again!

We got wrapped up and set out on a night walk, where we explored the woods and even turned off our torches and allowed our eyes to become accustomed to the darkness - we were blown away by how easy it became for us to walk in the darkness to the eerie sound of the owls hooting in the trees.

We've had a brilliant first day (all children are happy and settled). We're now settling down together with a cup of hot chocolate and a snack, before going to bed in preparation for our challenging hill walk tomorrow - wish us luck!

We'll check back in tomorrow - goodnight from Y5/6, Mrs Huntingdon & Mrs Vernon :)

P.S. Our WIFI signal isn't very strong so we are struggling to add photographs at the moment - we will keep trying.
