The Importance of Perseverance and Resilience

On 4th October, we welcomed George Fouche into school.

George was born in King Williams town, South Africa.  He talked to us about his life as a child growing up in South Africa and how his life has shaped who he is today. He is the third generation of international professional rugby players whose career spanned 14 years. In 1999 he left South Africa for the UK but soon into his stay a horrific spinal injury (which would have brought most peoples playing careers to an end) led to a renewed motivation to make a comeback and he enjoyed a very lucky 7 years in the English Premiership and the Heineken Cup.

His emotional and humorous assembly captivated all the children who were inspired by his key message ‘Your only limit is you’.  He reiterated the importance of taking every opportunity that is on offer, the need to fall so as you can get back up and try again and to be proud of where you grow up as it keeps your feet on the ground.

The message was clear; believe and your dreams can be achieved.

After his show, he spent the rest of the day working with pupils from Y1 to Y6 in smaller workshops.  Children in KS1 learned the importance of perseverance and resilience through a practical team building task of building the tallest tower with spaghetti and marshmallows.  KS2 learned more about the ten key characteristics of being successful: Drive, Discipline, Self confidence, Competitiveness, Focus, Commitment, Time management, Determination, Adaptability, Emotional maturity.

Thank you George you have inspired us all.
