We absolutely loved our trip to Arbeia, the Roman Fort, in South Shields.
We took part in 2 workshops: we became archaeologist and we made a frieze frame.
In the first workshop, we looked at artefacts, some from 2000 years ago, and thought about what must life have been like at the fort back then.
Our second workshop was in the museum and we looked at the artefacts such as skulls, hair pins, tombstones, altars, horse accessories, jewellery, bones and a whole skeleton! We drew one of the artefacts on brown paper, crumpled it up and tore around the outside. We put all of our work together and made a frieze.
After this, we walked around the fort and saw the West Gate and the toilets! It was interesting to see the difference in the size of the soldiers' barracks compared to the Commanding Officer's quarters.
