Year 4 took part in a workshop at the Hetton Centre for Show Racism the Red Card. We talked about having a new neighbour and which new neighbour would we choose. The options were a Muslim man, a bald man with tattoos, a refugee, a traveller family, a famous sportsperson, a family with children and other options. When we chatted, Year 4 gave some thoughtful answers such as 'I would like the refugee because I would be able to show them that this was a safe place to live' and ' I would like the bald man with tattoos as I would like to see his tattoos'.
We learned about where and why racism started many years ago and some children had some very challenging questions. It was great to hear all of the suggestions on what our children would do if they saw racism in school, and out of school, as well as how they could help.
At the end, there was a panel of guests, who we could ask questions to. Year 4 were astonished to see that there were two Sunderland footballers, Aji Alese and Wilson Isidor. We were able to get our goody bags signed and some of us were a little star-struck. The two footballers were brilliant at speaking our racist abuse they may have witnessed or been victim to and sharing what would happen if racism happened in a football match.
Together, we must show racism the red card.
