Every picture tells a story...
This week we looked beyond the seemingly discriminatory tone of Banksy's Clacton pigeon mural. Year 5 considered what message Banksy was trying to convey and altered the famous image to reflect British Values.
Banksy painted the pigeon mural on a boathouse wall in Clacton-on-Sea in Essex. This picture shows a group of pigeons holding anti-immigration placards saying 'Go back to Africa', 'Migrants not welcome' and 'Keep off our worms' while an African swallow looks on. We shared our thoughts about Banksy's political stance and his motivation behind creating the piece of art.
This lesson provided us with the perfect opportunity to discuss the importance of respecting others, even when they are different to us either because of where they are from or because of their physical appearance, personal preferences or beliefs.
Year 5 created some very well thought out pieces of art and really enjoyed discovering the work of Banksy.
