Hetton Colliery Railway

The year 2022 is the 200 year anniversary of the Hetton Colliery Railway, a development which was significant across the world.  The railway was designed by George Stephenson, and his brother Robert Stephenson was appointed as Chief Engineer to oversee the construction.  The railway took coal from Elemore Colliery, to the riverside in Sunderland, for transportation by boat.

We took part in the first project of the year: to build a replica of the Stephenson Locomotive in glass and steel – ‘Community Loco’. We learned about the railway, and designed and made a glass tile to be incorporated into the finished sculpture.  Jane, an artist from MBC Ceramics, came into school to work with us.
