We had a great time at the Beacon of Light yesterday, where we took part in four fun, interactive sessions:
Heritage hunt:
We hunted around the outside of the stadium using our guide of heritage -related photo clues, gathering information about each item and how they all linked together in the history of the football club as well as the mining colliery.
Physical activity session:
This was a PE session, where we acted as miners and had to move in different ways to collect as many 'piecesof coal' (cones) as we could, going head-to-head in small groups.
Club badge:
We took part in a history session about the SAFC club badge. Part of this session included designing our own badge, either for our us, school or a sports team etc. We also had the chance to try on Sunderland club football shirts (past and present).
Life of a miner:
Delivered by a former coal miner, the session brought to life what it was like working and living in a local mining community. With the addition of show and tell items, we had the unique opportunity of working with artist, Alfie Joey, who had some incredible skills and art work to show us.
