Coals to Goals—Beacon of Light

On our trip to the Beacon of Light, we learned all about coal mining and how it was linked to the site of the Stadium of Light.   During the day, we took part in different activities:

  • Coal mining—Bill Elliot told us all about his father and grandfather and what it was like to work down the mine
  • PE session—’Gather the coal’’ - we played games collecting cones in teams
  • Heritage walk—we used our booklets to spot important landmarks around the Stadium of Light (Black Cat, pit wheel, Bob Stokoe statue, mine shafts etc)
  • Visit to the Stadium of Light— we were able to look at the mining banners and a special football boot.
  • Sunderland Football badges—we looked at the way the badges had changed over time (and the meanings of different aspects of the badges) and watched some videos of Sunderland’s FA Cup victories of 1937 and 1973. We even designed our own badges.
