Year 6 studied the work of Charles Darwin - which covered adaptation, natural selection and the theory of evolution - as part of our Science topic. We used clips to replicate the beaks of the finches Darwin found living across the three Galapagos Islands: Santiago, Santa Cruz and Isabela. The children found that the size of the finches' beaks was directly linked to the most accessible food source on the island on which they lived - e.g. Isabela was home to the largest seeds and the finches with the largest beaks. We learnt that over time, the finches changed and had adapted to living on a particular island because the most favourable traits for each environment were the ones that were therefore reproduced and passed on.
