After viewing the emotive works of Käthe Kollwitz, children drew their own portraits using a series of lines and experiment with 'halo' and 'chiaroscuro' techniques. The aim of the session was to represent different emotions through drawing. We studied a range of drawings at the end of the lesson and decided which emotion we thought was being portrayed.

Children turned their Käthe Kollwitz inspired drawings from a previous lesson into clay sculptures, being aware of the message their sculpture portrayed through its expression and looking at sculptors such as Mark Wallinger. They created their sculpture head using clay, remembering that to keep clay malleable, they had to use a drop of water. Children used clay sculpting tools, adding facial features using additional pieces of clay and attaching these to the head.
